3 main types of Chi

Traditional Chinese Medicine recognizes 3 main types of Chi:

  • Ancestral – manifesting via the function of the kidneys
  • Digestive – manifesting via the function of the spleen/stomach, and...
  • Breath – manifesting via the function of the lungs

Digestive and Breath Chi are renewed daily, Ancestral Chi is delivered at birth in a set amount and is renewable with difficulty.

About the Yang Ming Diet

The Yang Ming Diet seeks to create harmony in the body via its effect on the digestive balance.

This balance is defined in terms of the state of the blood, whether the blood is hot, cold, damp or dry or a combination of some or all the preceding qualities. In western terms, these states may called "alcohol, oil and salt" or alkaline and acid (ph balance). Unfortunately, our Western diet is generally too acidic, leading to many of the diseases common today. These elemental qualities of alcohol, oil and salt produced by the body provide the ingredients necessary for the function of our body’s natural alchemic processes, that is turning food and drink into us.

By fashioning a dietary balance that seeks to restore harmony between heat (acid), cold (alkaline) and neutral (oil) the Yang Ming Diet acts to elevate food from fuel & pleasure to fuel, pleasure and medicine equating to wellbeing. When a correct dietary balance is achieved the digestive chi is restored thus providing the energy necessary for optimum function. In this way, when combined with both western and eastern medicines and therapy, good health may be restored.

"Food Classifications" is a list of common (Asian food) ingredients categorized according to the effect they have on the blood i.e. generating heat, or cooling the blood or creating a neutral balance. You may work out a menu tailored to your own dietary balance requirements by following the principles described below and consulting the list of "Food Classifications" information (soon to be available – see below).

Menus may be devised by selecting ingredients in the appropriate proportions to make a balanced meal i.e. for a cold and damp condition, select warming and drying foods on a neutral base in the following proportions; warming 40%, neutral 60%. For a hot, dry condition select cooling and neutral foods in the following proportions; cooling 40%, neutral 60%. For a cold and dry condition select warming and moisturizing foods in the following proportions; warming 40%, neutral 40% cooling 20%. For a hot, damp condition select cooling and drying foods in the following proportions; cooling 40%, neutral 40% and warming 20%.

These proportions are general. For example, some people with weak digestion which requires warming may be intolerant to spices. In this case select warming foods that are less spicy such as Ginger and Garlic.
